José Altafini scored twice as AC Milan became the first Italian side to win the European Cup in the first European Cup final to be held at Wembley Stadium. Benfics had taken the lead following a goasl from Eusebio after 19 minutes in a game watched by 45,715 fans.

On the way to the final AC Milan had defeated Union Luxembourg, Ipswich Town, Galatasaray and Dundee. Benfica had triumphed over Norrkoping, Dukla Prague and Feyenoord having been given a bye in the first round.
